ATM heists in Thailand may be linked incidents in Taiwan, Malaysia: police

The Thai police today released CCTV footage of two foreign men who they believe are among the group of culprits that succeeded in stealing THB12.29 million from the ATMs of Government Savings Bank.

The police said the two men, only identified as “Eastern European,” carried out a series of ATM heists with a team of less than 20 people by infecting the system with malware.

They said most preparators in the group approached the cash machines after midnight with their faces covered before stealing the money. The thefts, which took place in July were detected by the bank earlier this month. Police believe the foreigners were assisted by Thai nationals, reported National News Bureau of Thailand.

The nationalities of the men in the footage remain unknown, but police suspect the malware attacks in Thailand are linked with other ATM heists that took place in Taiwan and Malaysia.

Pol. Gen. Panya Mamen, who is supervising the investigation, said the people responsible for the ATM robberies in those countries were Russian and Ukrainian gang members. The Thai police will request  the information of the suspects in those crimes, who are still on the run, according to Khaosod.
