FOR 2 wall painting exhibit closes

FOR 2, a whimsical and wild exhibit of wall painting at the Bangkok Art and Culture Center, closed Friday September 23 with a small bash for the participating artists and fans.

Ducks, snakes, hulks, dawgs, boobz, skulls, and more have been plastered on the curving walls of the Guggenheim-esque spiral walkways between the floors of the museum since the show opened in March. The ultra-colorful murals by various artists blend into one another for a seamless viewing experience as one walks through.

Sixteen artists, most using nicknames, participated in the show: P7, Yuree, ZIDS, Mamafaka, cider, Never, May-T, 01, Tawan, Narissara, Rukkit , Miss Ink, Logan Bay, Wanapracha, TRK, and Space Limo. The styles of each vary widely but all seem to be very influenced by urban American street – the type of stuff you find in back alleys of San Francisco – with hyper-colorful styles and psychedelic, surreal creatures and landscapes. Despite the obvious influence, most of the artists in FOR2 have added their own personal idiosyncrasies and styles to make the murals unique… and maybe uniquely Thai. Logan Bay, hailing from Chicago, is probably the only farang artist in the show. His style features lots of American pop culture characters: Here, the Incredible Hulk, Winnie The Pooh, Disney leading female types, and a creepy ’90s Troll Doll are transmogrified into Rorschach-like semi-symmetrical design. The end result is totally engrossing… and kind of unsettling.
