Bangkok Daze: Spacing out for 26 minutes at the BACC

You know an art exhibition is worth a visit when you later dream about pilfering some of the pieces and being chased by monster security guards through Bangkok streets, fluffy clouds, and alien planets.

The dream was lucid, the outcome inevitable… I woke up in my Bangkok hotel, thirsty and with a flier for the Bangkok Art and Culture Center stuck to my forehead.

I like spacing out as much as the next man and the current expos at the BACC provide ample opportunity for Bangkokians to escape the streets, gulp down some air-con and stare at stuff for a while.

My girlfriend and I scaled the chalk-white edifice of the BACC and back down again in 26.34 minutes and didn’t feel rushed. There’s a student film festival going on just now, so you could spend much longer, but we had an afternoon appointment with a burrito at Phloen Chit (La Monita, oh yeah), so made it snappy.

But enough mushy pulp, here’s the juice on the two exhibitions we liked on at the BACC right now…

The 3rd Bangkok Triennale International Print and Drawing Exhibition (May 17-July 29)

Prime space-out opportunities here. Located on floor seven. Take the escalator, drop your bag, child or other things you want rid of and take the tour. Paintings + sculptures = definitely worth a look.

Good To Walk (May 29 – July 29)

This exhibition is a greedy one, occupying the spiral walkway between floors seven and nine. In a nutshell, it’s about re-defining the way we think about space and then smashing that perception to smithereens by putting stuff in the way of your path. It’s all about walking and having creative obstacles in the way to – well – stop and inspire you.

Enjoy, and go to La Monita after for a burrito before arriving back at work an hour late to be scolded by your boss. You won’t care, art will be on your brain and a burrito will be in your belly. You’ll just space out and take it, basking in your own Bangkok daze.
