Being universally recognized as a symbol of sanctuary and healing, the red cross appearing at many Thai army bunkers in the capital didn’t sit well with the international humanitarian group.
Today the Royal Thai Army said it would immediately remove the signs at the request of the Thai Red Cross Society.
The society had complained it was a misuse of the signs to palce them at checkpoints manned by armed soldiers, which could create confusion.
Army spokesman Col. Winthai Suvaree said some bunkers are solely manned by medics who were using the symbol.
There’s a long tradition to army medics being identified by wearing insignia with a red cross on a white field.
Nevertheless, Winthai said the army would take them down, Khaosod reported.
