Police arrested two soldiers headed toward Lumpini Park on Sunday night with guns and hundreds of bullets at a police checkpoint.
The soldiers were arrested at 11pm after attempting to drive past a police checkpoint on Langsuan Road. An inspection of their vehicle discovered a handgun, M16 rifle, and M4A1 rifle and a large cache of ammunition.
Military officials deny any links to protesters, and today army chief Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha today announced an investigation into soldiers’ arrest.
Maj. Gen. Warah Bunyasidh of the Royal Thai Army said he was “troubled” by the allegations.
“We won’t protect them,” he said. “However, regulations required that officers from the Judge Advocate General’s Corps must be present during the police interrogation.”
The weapons were not military issue, Warah added.
In recent weeks, other military personel have been detained with weapons and ammunition near anti-government protest sites, Khaosod reported.
