University boffins from Bangkok have discovered a poisonous spider in a cave in Kanchanaburi.
Chualalongkorn University entomologists discovered the creepy crawly, known as a Mediterranean recluse spider, as they were exploring the cave in Sai Yok district, Thai PBS reported.
But Mahidol University’s Manoj Yindee advised people last night to leave the spider alone, Bangkok Post reported.
Eminently sensible advice.
Manoj said the spider was not aggressive and preferred to hide in quiet, dark and dry places – and would not pose a danger to people unless they invaded its home and tried to catch it.
Chulalolongkorn PhD student Narin Chompoopuang said the venomous cave spider was probably brought into the country while the Japanese army were building the Death Railway in Kanchanaburi using slave labour during the second world war.
