Assistant Professor Somprasong Sattayamallee is sounding the alarm on Thailand’s sub-standard bus transportation systems.
Somprasong is arguing that bus operators favor profit over passenger safety, allowing for all manners of malfeasance in regards to the upkeep and piloting of Bangkok’s buses.
In particular, Somprasong singled out double-decker buses, which he says regularly violate the Department of Land Transport’s requirements. The operators of these buses regularly festoon them with additional wheels, and construct them a half-meter taller than the heights called for by the Department of Land Transport.
Many of these buses carry passenger loads of 50 to 55 people, the Nation reported, instead of the recommended 40.
