Anti-police Facebook page offers a barometer of Thai public sentiment

A recent series of news items about the notorious behaviors of the Thai police force has resulted in a surge in membership for the Facebook page “Hate Thai Police,” a Thai police watchdog group. That page’s membership is 54-times greater than the membership of the page “Love Thai Police.” This disparity clearly shows how fed up Thai civilians are with their law enforcement officials.

As reported earlier by Coconuts, a Din Daeng police officer was chased through the street yesterday after he had been caught taking a woman to a motel. Days earlier, a Thong Lor police officer was accused of brutally raping a Laotian worker. Acts such as these prompted the creation of Hate Thai Police.

“Members of this page well acknowledge that every organization has both good and bad individuals,” the page’s description reads. “The word ‘police’ used here therefore refers only to those bad cops who break the law themselves.”

Since joining Facebook two years ago, Hate Thai Police has gained steady momentum with each of its posts drawing thousands of likes, shares and comments. The page currently has 164,000 fans and is set to attract more like-minded Facebook users. It claims that they do not need donations or money support as their goal is merely to get rid of bad police. Interested donors are instead directed to help the Police General Hospital.
