Anti-government groups calling for street protests

Anti-government groups are gearing up for protests in the streets of Bangkok. The rallies are taking place in hopes of uncovering the reality of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and ruling group Pheu Thai Party’s upcoming amnesty bill.

The rallies will shed light on the Yingluck’s amnesty bill which critics and politicians believe will benefit former Primer Minister Thaksin and now troubled red-shirt leaders, this according to Suiyasai Katasila, coordinator of the Green Politics Group.

Opposition Leader Abhisit Vejjajiva addressed the bill saying, “It all depends on the government. People will take to the streets within seven days. The prime minister can decide not to bring the country back to a conflict, and instead focus on tackling the problem about the cost of living. It depends on whether she will do that,” said Abhisit, who is also the Democrat Party leader.

Protests will be strung across the city by various anti-government groups around the time that parliament reconvenes on August 7th. The Democrats are arranging for their “Reveal the Truth” show against an amnesty bill to take place some time between August 3 and 6 at Bangkok venues to be selected.

Tul Sitthisomwong, a leader of the multi-colored-shirts movement, stated that his group would protest outside Parliament between August 5 and 8 against the bill.

Vasit Dejkunchorn, a retired former deputy police chief and head of Thai Spring, said his group would demonstrate outside Parliament House.

The People’s Alliance for Democracy vows it will rally if it finds that the amnesty law intends to help Thaksin escape legal problems.

The People’s Army to Overthrow the Thaksin Regime, formerly known as Pitak Siam, called a meeting of group leaders to orchestrate a peaceful rally.

Protests are scheduled for different days, however it’s unclear whether the various groups will rally together, as reported by The Nation.
