Thailand’s Anntonia Porsild claimed the first runner-up title at the Miss Universe 2023 beauty pageant.

The 27-year-old Thai-Danish model came second overall at the 72nd Miss Universe pageant in El Salvador Sunday morning. The title went to Nicaragua’s Sheynnis Palacios.

Anntonia’s finish was the country’s highest placement since 1988 when Porntip “Bui” Simon was crowned Miss Universe.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin congratulated Anntonia for earning the title, as relayed by government spokesman Chai Wachanroke.

“Even though Ms Anntonia was not crowned Miss Universe, her first runner-up title has made Thailand famous on a world-level arena. We Thai people are very proud of her,” the spokesman said.

Chai also said that the success contributed to Thailand’s soft power, before praising Anntonia for her Earth Goddess traditional dress that she wore for the pageant’s national costumes contest.

Anntonia, who hails from Nakhon Ratchasima, said that although she did not bring home the crown, she was thankful for everyone’s support.

“No words can describe the way I’m feeling right now,” she wrote on Instagram. “I put my all on the stage tonight for Thailand, for everyone who believed in me and was a part of my journey. I’m sorry I couldn’t bring the crown home for us, and I am eternally grateful for all of the love and support I have received throughout this journey.”
