American woman escaping fatal DUI jail term arrested in Krabi

An American woman became the latest foreign fugitive picked up by authorities for extradition, Phuket authorities announced yesterday.

Kelly Lynn Miller, 36, was arrested Tuesday on Koh Lanta, off the coast of Krabi province upon the request of American authorities who wanted her extradited to serve a manslaughter sentence she’d fled the United States to avoid.

After being sentenced to five years in prison on manslaughter charges for a fatal car crash while driving under the influence, Miller jumped bail in 2009 and fled to Thailand, where she hid on different islands for nearly six years without a visa. Authorities believe her relatives in the United States had been sending her money.

Recently a string of foreign fugitives hiding out in Thailand have been picked up for extradition. On Monday accused American fraudster Joseph Arsenault was taken into custody in the On Nut area on an extradition request, and over the weekend, Canadian Antonius Ceulen was arrested after a decade on the run.

Miller had a 2-month-old newborn at the time of her arrest; both will be sent to the United States.

Miller was convicted for the death of Florida truck driver Donald Goodwin, 57. She struck and killed Goodwin while he was checking his tires on the roadside in Hoover, Alabama in 2004.

Miller may also face charges of violating immigration law by overstaying in Thailand before she is deported back to the United States, Phuketwan reported.
