An American man wanted on drug charges in the U.S. was arrested in Krabi today after he had been working as an English teacher in the province’s international school.
Alexander Jonathan Rosen was nabbed at an unnamed international school in response to a request from the U.S. Embassy, who stated that Rosen had been hiding in Thailand, reported Thai News Agency.
However, we found this Facebook post announcing that Rosen started working at The British International School of Krabi in June of last year.
That same post stated that he graduated from Louisiana’s prestigious Tulane University and used to teach at Ravenscroft private school in North Carolina. A search of local records in North Carolina revealed that someone by exactly the same name and filed for bankruptcy in 2015.
Immigration Bureau records show that Rosen entered Thailand on Oct. 31, 2015 on a tourist visa. Although an arrest warrant was issued for him on Dec. 11, 2015, Rosen was able to leave and re-enter Thailand several times. Thai PBS reported that he applied for a temporary residence permit to work as an English teacher in September of 2016 but didn’t have a work permit for the job.
Pol. Lt. Gen. Natthorn Prohsunthorn, commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, advised all international schools to carefully check the background of candidates who apply for a teaching job. The schools should also handle their work and residence paperwork, to ensure that the teachers are not “dangerous personnel,” as Rosen has been branded.
Apart from having his U.S. passport canceled by the U.S. authorities, the Immigration Bureau has canceled Rosen’s visa. He will be deported and banned from re-entering the country.
