AIS fires employee for selling customer phone records

Major mobile operator AIS admitted that its employee sold a customer’s phone records, which included information that could put her in danger, such as her locations, after the victim complained on social media.

AIS senior vice-president Wilai Kiangpradoo, said yesterday that the company found out that the allegations posted on the Pantip forum were true and has fired the employee in question, who is now facing legal action.

Wilai did not identify the employee and only said it was a senior employee who had been working for the company for a long time. That person is facing up to five years in prison for violating the Telecommunications Business Act B.E. 2549, Bangkok Biz News reported.

AIS is also investigating if there are other employees involved.

On Monday, the victim, an unidentified woman, wrote on Pantip forum that she found out an AIS employee sold her information to a third person. Her incoming and outgoing calls and the time and locations she made those calls were sold in a spreadsheet.

“After I saw the Excel file, I was shocked and speechless,” she wrote. “Looking at this information, I realized the person who has this would know where I am and at what time, and who I talk to.”

Without revealing further details, she alleged that this employee had been paid more than THB100,000 for the phone records, and that they had been leaking customers’ information for 2-3 years.
