7-Eleven commercial on Adweek’s list of top viral ads of 2016

Everyone knows that Thai advertisements are world-class tearjerkers.

The convenience store’s eight-minute movie “Teachers,” in honor of Teacher’s Day, ranks in 10th place on Adweek’s 20 Most Viral Ads of 2016 list. The magazine and website is the most highly-respected publication covering advertising and media trends.

The movie is based on the true story of Rujisamorn, a caring principal who saves her school, which is about to be seized by land developers. Fearing her poor students will not be able to afford tuition fees if her school closes down, Rujisamorn denies the THB1 billion offer from the developers and keeps operating the school for the sake of her students.

The video ends with the bit that will pull your heartstrings. Years later, an elderly, bed-ridden Rujisamorn is visited by a group of her students that spans many generations. Her ex-students honor her in a Teacher’s Day ceremony and give her flower garlands to express their gratitude.

While the video has nothing to do with 7-Eleven, Thailand’s largest convenience store chain gets to put their logo at the end.

Adweek explained that their rankings are based on which ads attracted the most shares on Youtube and Facebook and how actively the viewer passed on the content rather than just watching it.
