500 electric buses to roll into town

Five hundred new electric buses will soon roll out onto the mean streets of Bangkok in a trial by transport officials.

The e-fleet will operate alongside the NGV-powered buses currently in service once the Ministry of Transport wins approval for the purchase, which it argues will result in lower costs over their lifespan.

Importing one electric bus costs THB15 million, while its whole-life cost over a period of 20 years including maintenance and fuel will come to THB30 million. Transportation says that’s a better deal than diesel-powered buses (THB43 million overall) and NGV-fueled vehicles (THB34 million).

The proposal is expected to go for approval next week, Thai PBS reported.
