When IKEA Thailand released a video demonstrating some alternative uses for their TORKIS laundry basket – which just so happens to come in an attractive “Coconuts green” – we couldn’t help but conjure up with a few kooky ideas of our own.
IKEA says the TORKIS has to be strong enough to carry heavy loads, and therefore tested it in their Swedish office in the best way they knew how – by carrying a 90 kilogram man around inside it. The handles held up, and the man looked pretty comfortable, we must say.
The furniture giant also suggests the basket could be the perfect place to wash your dog, but we think we can do better than that. Introducing four ways the IKEA TORKIS laundry basket would only be used in Thailand:
A super soaker bucket for Songkran

If you’ve ever experienced Songkran in Thailand, you’ll know that being armed with the right weapons is essential for survival. Water pistols may have aim, precision and look cool, but when the target is right in front of you and hurting for way more than a squirting, make the TORKIS your tool of choice. We laugh in the face of your tiny, basic bucket!
A super shareable bucket for a Full Moon Party

Boozy Thai buckets, filled with an lethal concoction of Sangsom and soft drinks, are the poison of choice at the famous Full Moon Parties in Koh Phangan. But what’s the party of a lifetime without a band of revved up ravers to share it with? Turn the TORKIS into the most epic sharing bucket of all time and become everyone’s favourite person.
The world’s biggest som tam bowl

Can’t get enough som tam? Of course you can’t – that stuff is delicious! Next time you head out to your road-side cart when a craving for the spicy papaya salad hits you, switch the measly pestle and mortar for the mighty TORKIS. We all know one bag of som tam is never enough, so up the ante and go home with a mountain instead, like a boss.
A motorcycle basket of dreams

You’ll see everything and anything carried on motorcycles in Thailand, be it groceries, live animals, or entire families of seven. Every square-inch of space matters, so why settle for a regular-sized basket? Pimp your ride with the TORKIS and instantly become the envy of the nation.
As you can see, the TORKIS is not just a laundry basket, but if you really insist on using it as one, we guess that’ll be okay too.
