18 Thai state-run hospitals are broke and in massive debt

News emerged yesterday that 18 state-run hospitals have no money and are actually running with debts ranging from THB92 million to as much as THB400 million.

A list of the hospitals revealed to be in serious financial trouble, with the amount of debts owed in parenthesis, are: King Rama III Hospital (THB354 million), Saraburi Hospital (THB321 million), Uttaradit Hospital (THB277 million), Sakon Nakhon Hospital (THB225 million), Surat Thani Hospital (THB219 million), Khon Kaen Hospital (THB214 million) Chao Phraya Yommaraj Hospital (THB199 million), Hua Hin Hospital (THB194 million), Wachira Phuket Hospital (THB185 million), Phayao Hospital (THB164 million), Phichit Hospital (THB156 million), Songkhla Hospital (THB138 million), Hat Yai Hospital (THB133 million), Nakhon Ping Hospital (THB131 million), King Rama II Hospital (THB116 million), Phra Phutthabat Hospital (THB115 million), Prachuap Khiri Khan Hospital (THB102 million), and Sukhothai Hospital (THB92 million).

Public Health Minister Dr. Piyasakol Sakonsattayatorn announced that the long-dire situation is now critical but that the government was trying to come up with solutions to help the failing medical care institutions, reported Thai PBS.

He also noted that their current financial state was due to both bad management and not getting enough funding from the government.
