17-year-old grenade finally put to rest

A bomb unit disarmed a fully functional fragmentation grenade left lying around a vacant On Nut condominium for 17 years.

Construction workers renovating the long-empty unit found the M-67 grenade in the bathroom’s ceiling and called in a bomb squad from the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal, who evacuated the building before defusing the bomb.

Investigators believe the grenade belonged to Athipat Ukritkan, the previous tenant and a former police officer. Athipat served from 1995 to 1998 as an officer in the Phra Pradaeng district before being discharged for dereliction of duty, according to Thai Visa News.

Athipat was reportedly deep in debt before he disappeared without a trace in 1998, leaving his condo vacant until the recent renovation effort.

Although Phra Khanong police have put out a summons for Athipat, no success has been made in tracking him down
