120 deserted buildings in Bangkok should have security guards, officials suggest

Urban explorers and travelers who hunt for obscure and bizarre sites may have to rule off Bangkok’s “Ghost Tower” and other abandoned buildings, if the city gets serious about policing them.

Long a draw for photographers and the curious for easy access to its unfinished, 49-story frame, the Sathorn Unique Tower and more than 100 other abandoned buildings may be made more secure after a foreign man apparently committed suicide there earlier this month.

The discovery of a Swedish man’s body hanged on the tower’s 43rd floor on Friday has prompted the Public Works Department to “demand” heightened security measures from all owners of abandoned structures.

There are 120 deserted buildings higher than eight-stories in Bangkok which were left unfinished and undemolished for various reasons. The Department of Public Works has contacted the owners and gently suggested they should hire security guards, increase safety and put lights in the buildings, according to department Deputy Director Pattarawut Tantran-non.

He added the department has requested police to watch out for possible crimes in the deserted buildings, INN News reported.
