Me Sex: State-funded app offers refreshingly honest guide to masturbation and safe sex

It’s almost Valentine’s Day, and in the 21st Century, teens are turning to a government-issued smartphone app for information about “the birds and the bees.”

The sexy application from Thai Health Promotion Foundation – the same people behind those provocative anti-smoking ads – became a popular topic in an online forum yesterday for the upcoming romantic day for lovers.

“Me Sex” is a Thai-language sex-ed application which launched last summer which as received praise online for its abundant information and cool graphics about puberty and sex.

While “’Me Sex” might sound like bad English, its phonetic meaning is “Have Sex” in Thai.

As teens enter the app, they can choose to view male or female sections which will show them answers they might be looking for, from the different uses for their genitals to confirming there is nothing harmful about masturbation. In case they didn’t know.

All questions in the application came from real inquiries from teens in the organization’s online forum, which is also available and accessible through the app.

It’s a nice gesture to see objective and shame-free information from a state agency in such a self-styled conservative country. We also look forward to hearing about the official campaign for Valentine’s Day, which usually consists of giving away free condoms at department stores and threatening teens with curfew on the big day.

Maybe someone should consider a campaign which points out just how cliche it would be to lose one’s virginity on Valentine’s Day. Even then, most teens who would be aware of the campaign have probably already done it.

Here’s the link to the app on iTunes.
