Weekend Warrior: May 17, 2013

Welcome to Weekend Warrior, where we offer you a few ideas to kick-start your weekend of mayhem. Warriors, go forth.

Friday

KEMF: Kloud Electronic Music Festival at Tapas Room Club
Originally developed as a Khao San-spanning backpacker mega-party, Kloud Electronic Music Festival (KEMF) has remained true to its genre-blending roots, even as it seeks grander locales. Serge Carlton staged the first KEMF back in 2009, and though he unfortunately passed away last year, his party concept lives on, bringing together house, progressive, bass, tribal house, drum ‘n bass and countless other micro-genres into one, colossal party.
9:30pm. THB350 (includes one drink). Tapas Room Club. BTS Sala Daeng Station.

Saturday

Dodos Day Fest at Centerpoint Studio
American indie pop duo the Dodos is playing in Bangkok this weekend. We might have mentioned this before. The reasons why you should attend this show are myriad (Cool booths! Enticing Thai bands! Swag!) but they all stem from the essential truth that the Dodos are a really, really good band. Listen to this mixtape, check out this profile and, if you feel so inclined, enter for a chance to win free tickets to the show. It’s going to be a blast, guaranteed. We’ll see you there.
2 – 11:30pm. THB1,000 advance, THB1,200 day of (includes one drink). Centerpoint Studio, Sukhumvit 105. BTS Bearing Station.

Bangkok Night Criterium at Karnjanaphisek Rd
Combining cycling, Bangkok and the cover of darkness seems like a grand means for courting personal injury, which I’d wager counts for at least part of the sexy allure of the Bangkok Night Criterium. A cycling race comprised entirely of fixed gear bicycles (“the ones without brakes” to you neophytes), the Criterium gathers a set of inveterate adrenaline junkies and unleashes them along a course of hairpin turns, heavy traffic and stifling heat. Sign up for the race if you’re feeling ambitious, or hew to the beer and food by the sidelines if you’re curious/sane.
4pm. Registration is THB300 advance or THB350 day-of. Karnjanaphisek Rd, Bangkae.

Sunday

Neilson Hays Library Used Book Sale at Neilson Hays Library
Typically, I do a good job keeping my book nerdom from interfering with my otherwise functional existence, but dangling the prospect of the Neilson Hays Library’s used book sale in front of me is like telling a coke addict that you just happened to leave an anthill-sized wealth of blow sitting on his kitchen counter. The sale, in which used English language titles will be hawked for between THB50 and THB250, promises a wide selection of genre fiction, children’s books and literary gems. Proceeds from the sale will help keep the Neilson Hays Library up and running, which is a very good thing, seeing as its café, collection and architecture make it one of Bangkok’s most unique literary treats.
9:30am – 4pm (open Saturday as well). Free. Neilson Hays Library, 195 Surawong Rd
