Weekend Warrior: March 7, 2014

Welcome to the Weekend Warrior, wherein we will dress like Vikings and dance the techno til dawn.

Friday

SOUND UP: Everything all at once now (and then some)

Speedy Grandma’s latest installation (experiment?) comes from artist Scot Cotterell and his ear for unconventional soundwaves. Cotterell toys with magnetic fields, input and output jacks, and the clicks/pops of corrupted files and incomplete downloads to show the disturbing side of the modern-day media machine. Check out a sneak peek of the works going up on Speedy Grandma’s Facebook page.

7pm, exhibition runs until March 30. Free entry. Speedy Grandma, Soi Charoenkrung 28. Si Phraya Pier, Chao Phraya.

TOKYO CALLING: Paintbox Vol. 2

The new Goja art gallery and café is still creeping through its soft opening with one more group installation. The bulk of these modern artists come from Japan, including Maharo, one of Tokyo’s most up and coming painters known for his mural and shoji (paper panel doors). Look out for works from local Thai street artists Orawan Arunrak and Kowut Suphawanichleela.

7 pm, exhibition runs until April 6. Free entry. Goja Gallery Café, 5/2 Soi Peedeepanomyong 3, Sukhumvit 71. BTS Phra Kanong.

Saturday

ACTING OUT: Bangkok Improv Lab

Hey, aspiring actors out there – we know you came to Thailand to “make it” so why not beef up on experience with an improv workshop? But in all seriousness, this jam is a great way to freshen up the body and mind while meeting new people. The teachers on Saturday and another class on March 22 are Olya Petryk, a contemporary dancer and choreographer trained in Denmark, and Nitipat Ong Pholchai, with a background in Tai Chi and theatre.

5:30 to 7:30 pm. Pay-what-you-can donation from THB 150 to 3,000. Fitness7 Gym, 63 Ratchadapisek 7 (Soi Nathong). MRT Thailand Cultural Center or Huai Kwang.

JUNGLE JUICE: Trasher’s Into the Wild

Trasher is throwing down with another wild and whimsical party theme: this time pulling from the lakhon or Thai soap opera storybook. “Into the Wild” is a tribute to Angkor, an adventure epic set from a few years ago. But for those who haven’t dipped into the delusional but addictive world of lakhon, Trasher’s party experts ask you dress like an animal, hunter or anything ferocious.
9pm. LED Club, Block C, Royal City Avenue.  MRT Petchaburi.

HARPING ON: Harp Winner’s Concert

For something more relaxing this weekend, you can check out the winners from Goethe Institute’s annual harp contest are taking the stage for a complimentary public concert. Look out for three performances, including a concerto from senior harpist Chayamol Sanmueng with the RTAF Chamber Orchestra.

5 pm. Free entry. Goethe Institute, Soi Goethe (off Sathorn Soi 1). MRT Lumpini.

Sunday
