Weekend Warrior: March 21, 2014

Welcome to the Weekend Warrior, wherein our artisanal events are carefully selected for their sourcing, sustainability, community reinvestment and carbon footprint.

Friday

FULLY UNPLUGGED: Acoustic Session feat. Make Like a Tree, Tapestry and Ben Edwards

Jam’s turning off the decks and amps for a relaxed evening of acoustic music from three contrasting artists. Make Like a Tree is a “traveling musical project” from a Ukrainian musician named Sergey, and every performance features whatever musicians he happens to find on his travels. Tapestry and Ben Edwards (frontman for Basement Tape and Plastic Section) are both local acts, with experimental tastes – we’re talking sitar, roots and solid rock ‘n’ roll.

9 pm. THB 150. Jam, Charoen Rat Soi 1. BTS Surasak

WEIRD SOUNDS: EESE 2014

For those into the more psychedelic, trippy side of electronic music, this festival is a windfall. Experimental Electronic South East (EESE) brings together DJs and musicians playing noise, ambient, IDM and experimental for two jam-packed days of performances. There’s even workshops, including modular synthesizers and how to make your own hand-made instrument.

Friday to Saturday. THB 300 including one drink for one-day ticket, THB 550 including two drinks for two-day ticket. Stereo Bar, 4236 Rama 4 Road. MRT Khlong Toei

DOCUMENTARY THEATRE: In Ter View

New Theatre Society’s “In Ter View” blurs the line between fact and fiction by putting Thai theatre actresses on stage to intimately narrate their life and work. Each woman will put forth a from-the-heart monologue, without hiding behind a character or scripts. This weekend there are six actresses on stage, and another six performing April 3 to 7.

March 20 to 24, April 3 to 7, 8 pm. THB 450 to 550. Democrazy Theater Studio, 29-30 Soi Saphankhu, Rama 4 Road. MRT Lumphini

Saturday

CRAFT BEER: Baird Tap Takeover

Sway, one of the many hip bar/eatery joints in Thong Lor, is celebrating adding to its beer repertoire by throwing this little shindig. Guests can come out and sample Baird, an up-and-coming craft beer from Japan handmade in small batches by a husband and wife in Numazu.

7 pm. Free Entry. Sway, Thong Lor 10. BTS Thong Lor

APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION: Destroy the Dancefloor

The brats and fun-seekers of Spoiled Rotten host a rooftop dance party featuring Youssef Yeah! from London at Bangkok Bar Infinity. The hips and hops will be heard along with some funk, R’n’B, UK Garage and (the ever tantalizing) “more.” Local DJs Boogie G and DJLOWS will spin along with local band Yamin.

9pm. THB250, including one drink. Bangkok Bar Infinity, Thong Lor 10. BTS Thong Lor.

Sunday

WORLD TOUR: Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra

Japan’s oldest and largest orchestra finally makes its Bangkok debut. Conducted by Eiji Oue and featuring prized master violinist Kyoko Takezawa, the Tokyo Philharmonic will perform concertos from Tchaikovsky.

4 pm. THB 1,000 to 3,000. College of Music, Mahidol University, Salaya

SHOWTUNES: Voices of Musicals

A soprano, baritenor and baritone are putting their pipes together for this charity gig, with all proceeds going to the Gift of Life Foundation for patients with blood disease. Check out the Facebook event page for the full song list, including hits from The Wizard of Oz, Les Mis and Guys and Dolls.

4 pm. THB 500. Sala Sudasiri Sobha, 20 Ladprao 41 (Yaek 7-2). MRT Lat Phrao

DEUTSCHLAND COMETH: Thaibreak Closing Party

Every year, hundreds of Germans invade Khao Mak and leave it in shambles with the Thaibreak electronic music festival. This time, the wrap party is at Glow Nightclub with a few standout acts like Monkey Safari (the guys behind the house-meets-power ballad “Hi Life”) and Einzelkind.

9 pm. THB 300 including one drink. Glow Nightclub, Sukhumvit 23. BTS Asoke Station, MRT Sukhumvit
