Weekend Warrior: June 14, 2013

Welcome to Weekend Warrior, where we offer you a few ideas to kick-start your weekend of mayhem. Warriors, go forth.

Friday

Secret Gig Volume 2 at Immortal Bar
In metal, hardcore and punk circles, you can generally gauge the intensity of a show by looking for certain signifiers on its flier. The promotional material for Secret Gig Volume 2 is both printed in black-and-white (points) and crams more bands onto its scant real estate than you’d think would fit into one night of music (point galore!). Groups such as Hopeless, Degaruda and Random Fxck will be on hand this Friday to punish eardrums and get all agro over everybody’s arse. Wear leather, expect violence.
8pm. Free. Immortal Bar. 3rd Floor Piramid Plaza, SoiBoonchusri, Dindaeng Rd.

DJ Leo & Golf, Fucking Hero at Vie Bar
Fucking Hero is one of the most interesting MCs in Thailand, perhaps Asia as a whole. An ex-law student who went from subsisting on cat food to fronting international festivals, his measured, workmanlike approach to hip-hop belies the genre’s typical materialism. And hey, speaking of materialism, this party is offering a buy-three, get-one-free deal on Jack Daniels and cola, which seems custom-designed to facilitate bad decision-making.
9:30pm. Free. Vie Bar. BTS Rachathewi station.

Blur at WTF Gallery and Bar
Coming fresh off its fantastic, posthumous exhibition of works by photographer Tim Hetherington, WTF Gallery & Café is putting up a series of pieces by Jorge Carlos Smith, entitled “Blur.” Featuring an array of multimedia pieces, this show lets the hotelier-cum-artist cast a potpourri of different media about WTF’s gallery space. If the past is any indication, this should result in some fantastic examples of innovative content playing fast and loose with an amorphous form.
4pm – 10pm, the “Blur” exhibition will be up through July 18. Free. WTF Gallery & Café. BTS Thonglor station.

Saturday

Bangkok Barefoot Run Club at Lumpini Park
According to my scant knowledge of human anatomy, there is some muscular-skeletal benefit to running while barefoot. Some people (me) would tend to find this benefit outweighed by the health risks attendant to running around without shoes in Bangkok, but I understand that I might have a minority opinion here. The Bangkok Barefoot Run Club has apparently found a happy means by which to shed their shoes, and for that, I say more power to them. Those interested in joining in on the fun are invited to congregate this Saturday inside the Lumpini Park Library at 6:30pm sharp.
6:30pm. Free. Lumpini Park Library, Inside Gate 4. BTS Ratchadamri station, MRT Lumphini station.

DJ Crazy B at Sonic Bangkok
Okay, so if you’re looking to dance your tits off this weekend, this is your ticket. French DJ Crazy B, in his solo work, collaborations and compositions as part of Birdy Nam Nam, has probably induced more asses to shaking than the San Andreas fault. In recent years, Crazy B has collaborated with A$AP Rocky and Skrillex, plus maintaining an heroic travel schedule of which we in Bangkok are the direct beneficiaries.
9pm. THB400 advance, THB500 day-of. Sonic Bangkok, Sukhumvit 63. BTS Ekkamai station.
