Weekend Warrior: July 12, 2013

Phatfunk present a boat-bound mascot

Welcome to Weekend Warrior, where we offer you a few ideas to kick-start your weekend of mayhem. Warriors, go forth.

Friday

DANCE: Pump Up the Slow Jam Vol. 2: ‘90s Eurobeat v. ‘90s Hip-Hop at Sonic Ekamai
The ‘90s are the new ‘80s, at least in the sense that we have gained distance from them sufficient to appreciate their cultural trappings in an ironic manner. Or, hey, maybe with you it’s not ironic. Maybe you actually want to get down to the thin drums and hard rhymes of ’90s hip-hop, or the insane, occasionally frustrating rhythms of ‘90s Eurobeat. I, for one, could definitely go for the hip-hop half of the equation, and if I have to suffer through some Eurobeat in order to relive the days when Snoop was still a “Dogg,” then that’s a price I’m willing to pay.
9pm. THB100. Sonic Ekkamai, 90 Sukhumvit 63 (Ekamai). BTS Ekamai station.

Saturday

SHOPPING: Made by Legacy at Studio 61
Rather than wrapping your head into a knot trying to figure out what it actually means for something to be “made by legacy,” consider just heading down to Sukhumvit 61 to bear firsthand witness to what looks like an absolutely killer collection of vintage doo-das. According to Made by Legacy’s website, this high-end flea market will offer such items as clothing, shoes, books, records and furniture to diligent bargain hunters.
3pm – 9pm. THB100 for entry. Studio 61, Sukhumvit Soi 61. BTS Ekamai station.

BOAT PARTY: Phatfunk on the Boat at Saphan Taksin Pier
As established long ago by hardworking party scientists, everything becomes 200% cooler when placed on a boat. Bangkok drum ‘n bass collective Phatfunk, already pretty damned cool in its own right, has taken this premise to its logical extreme by placing its normally landlocked party proclivities out on the open sea (or at least on the open Chao Phraya River). Coconuts, ever the wind in your proverbial sails, has already provided the background you need to make the most of this fantastic opportunity to go apeshit in a nautical setting.
9pm (boat departs at 10pm). THB900 for standard admission, THB1,300 for VIP, both include two drinks. Departs from Saphin Taksin Pier. BTS Saphan Taksin station.

Sunday

EXCERCISE: The Rainbow Run #2 at Lumpini Park
Jointly sponsored by the Rainbow Room Foundation and Punky Runners, Rainbow Run #2 aims to raise awareness about those with special needs residing within Thailand. This means that if you can claw yourself out of bed in the early hours of Sunday morning, you will not only be doing something good for yourself, you will also be contributing to the world’s general well-being. Rainbow Run #2 features a variety of distances (2.5k, 5k, 7.5k and 10k) and a children’s run, so regardless your athletic competence, you should be able to find a run that suits your abilities.
6am. THB300 registration fee. Lumpini Park. BTS Sala Daeng station, MRT Lumphini station.

EPIC FILM: Mughal-e-Azam at Lumpini Park
The 1960 Indian epic Mughal-e-Azam (The Greatest of the Mughals) enjoys a place in the critical canon alongside such English-language classics as Ben Hur and Cleopatra. While critically lauded, Mughal-e-Azam has persisted in its popularity thanks in no small part to the epic-ness of the whole affair. The amount of extras and horses employed in the shoot numbered in the thousands; it was at the time the most expensive movie ever produced in India and it took nearly a decade to film. To get a sense of the film’s scale, just check out the clip below and marvel as the camera pulls back to reveal a seemingly infinite set, every inch of which is bedazzled in faux finery.
12:30pm. Free. Thammasat University (Ta Prachan Campus), Rewat Buddhinian room.
