Weekend Warrior: Feb. 28, 2014

Welcome to the Weekend Warrior, wherein if you rearrange every sentence carefully you can find our irrefutable evidence that the Illuminati movement did actually control everything until the death of its leader Brian Jones in 1969.

CREEPY CLASSIC: Jekyll & Hyde

This weekend’s crucial theatre fix comes courtesy of Mahidol University’s College of Music with a production of Jekyll and Hyde. Based on the classic novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, this Broadway adaption uses angst-y tunes to tell the story of a man who conducts an experiment on himself with results … most sinister! The performance is in English, with Thai and English subtitles and a live orchestra.

COUNTRY ROADS: Lost in Paradise

This new exhibition from local photographer Lek Kiatsirikajorn takes a look at Bangkok’s urban no man’s land of rural workers, who have all left home seeking a better life. It’s an allegory for modern Thailand: a country trying to shed its agricultural past but trapped somewhere between history and progress. Lek’s got an interesting story, having studied painting at Silpakorn University before moving to England in 2001. This exhibition is sponsored by the Quai Branly museum in Paris. Get in on the opening party at 6:30 pm, while the exhibition runs until April 27.

6:30 pm. Kathmandu Photo Gallery, 87 Pan Road (off Silom Road). BTS Chong Nonsi or Surasak

SPLISH SPLASH: Phatfunk Pool Party

Phatfunk’s premiere pool party is exactly as it sounds: fresh drum and bass beats by a sunny, outdoor pool on Sukhumvit. It’s free entry and the tipples are considerably cheap – THB 120 for a Heineken or long drink and glasses of wine and prosecco at THB 150. Bring a change of clothes so you can jump onto the evening circuit directly afterwards.

CROONERS UNITE: Bangkok School Charity Concert

It’s Thailand’s best indie talent on the city’s biggest rooftop bar and restaurant, all for a couple good causes. Standouts include Count the Thief, The Sangsom Massacre, Unicorn Domination and headlining act, Thailand’s bluesgrass, “gangsta-rock” darling Hugo. The line-up starts from 3 pm onwards and 100 percent of the proceeds go to Camillian Home, an orphanage and daycare for disabled and terminally ill kids, and Operation Smile, which pays for reconstructive surgery for people with facial deformities. Plus, we’d never miss a chance to hear Hugo’s epic “99 Problems” cover live!

WAYBACK TRACK: Banana Split II

Do you ever find yourself lusting for those glory days of neon exercise-wear and scrunchies? Well, you can relive the past at this concert, where Thailand’s biggest, stars of the ’90s are uniting just for one night only. Solid State, Siam Secret Service and 4 Taoter are playing all the hits that made them famous 20 years ago – has it seriously been 20 years since the ’90s? Good grief!
