Weekend Warrior: Dec. 20, 2013

Welcome to the Weekend Warrior, wherein we not only gyre and wabe with a multitude of mimsy borogoves but hone a gleaming snicker-snack on the vorpal blades of all our beamish girls and boys.

Friday

Night at the Museum 4

Get ready to lurk the halls of Museum Siam for the annual series of evening explorations in Night at the Museum. This year’s theme, Kin Dai or “edible,” will feature temporary exhibitions about Thailand’s tasty gastronomic culture, food stalls and cooking workshops on everything from lemongrass chicken to basil rice and soup.

6 pm to 10 pm, Friday to Sunday. Free entry. Museum Siam, Phra Nang Klao Road. Chao Phraya River Express Big C Pier.

Mode Sathorn Opening

The Silom Renaissance continues with the grand opening of the Mode Sathorn by Siam@Siam. Marketed as Bangkok’s “first party hotel”, the new venue is throwing open the doors from the rooftop down to pool bar with local and international DJs. The man behind the entertainment is local party promoter Daryl Scott, who previously featured midgets lacquered in silver paint to look like extraterrestrials at Bash’s grand opening. While we’re still having nightmares about his costume for Bed’s closing – a bride with an umbilical cord and baby doll dragging behind – we’re of course expecting this to be an interesting rager.

Friday to Sunday. Free entry, no tank tops or sandals allowed. Mode Sathorn, 144 North Sathorn Road, Silom. BTS Surasak.

TH4i

There aren’t many Thai DJs playing house and techno in the local underground scene, so that’s what makes this event such a treat. Glow Nightclub has rounded up four of the best, DJs Ekanan, Wintix, Oum and With Love’s cuddly Superstar Panda to hit the decks solo and back-to-back.

9 pm. THB 300 including one drink. Glow Nightclub, Sukhumvit 23. BTS Asoke Station, MRT Sukhumvit.

Saturday

PUNK ROCK: Itchy Band

If you get out of bed for anything this weekend, let this be it – four femme-fatales from Chiang May playing garage punk rock. We first fell in love with Itchy Band at a Harmonica gig last year, but since then the punk band – who by the way, get its name from the Thai word for “horny” – has released its second album, Live Fast Die Fun. While these ladies are certainly easy on the eyes, it doesn’t change the fact they can drop gut-tearing guitar licks layered with heavy cymbals and screaming like nobody’s business.

9 pm. Zoo, Free entry. 19 Prachathipatai Road, Phra Nakhon, Bangkok. Walking distance from Democracy Monument.
