Weekend Warrior: April 18, 2014

Welcome to the Weekend Warrior, wherein ‘the wine will flow red, and the music will play loud, and we’ll put this mess behind us.’

Friday

Tam Kai: Hunting the Chicken

Fresh from touring the Netherlands, the Pichet Klunchun Dance Company is now performing Tam Kai: Hunting the Chicken for a second run in Bangkok this month. The company tells the Ayutthaya-time epic of a magical pheasant that tries to lure Phra Lor through contemporary dance. We’re especially excited about the live traditional Thai folk music such as the ranad ek or alto xylophone.

Friday to Sunday, 7 pm. THB700 or 300 for students. Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), Rama 1 Road. BTS National Stadium.

Fresh Photo Japan

The new Goja Gallery and Café continues to make a name in Bangkok’s art scene with the new pop-up shop Fresh Photo Japan. Art appreciators can get their hands on photography from rising Japanese talents, the latest in Japanese photography magazines and the signature collection of works “Wonderbox” put together by curators Einstein Studio. The opening reception is at 7 pm on Friday, but you can check it out until May 4.

7 pm. Shop is open until May 4. Goja Gallery Café, Sukhumvit 71. BTS Phra Kanong.

Wine Tastings

If you’re hoping to prolong the Songkran party, Brotzeit’s one of the few venues this weekend that’s got you covered. The German restaurant in Thong Lor is offering “buy one get one free” wine tastings during the weekend to celebrate Easter. Glasses are THB250.

Friday to Sunday. 1 pm to 7 pm. Brotzeit, Thong Lor 10. BTS Thong Lor.

Saturday

TH4i vol. 3

Postponed because of the pre-election liquor ban last month, Glow’s Th4i party series is back featuring the best local Thai DJs behind the decks. Even though Songkran is over, except nothing short of a dance-y evening with resident DJ Wintix joined by DJs Oum, Krit Morton and Montonn Jira, who returns to Bangkok nightlife after a long hiatus.

10 pm. Glow Nightclub, Sukhumvit 23. BTS Asoke Station. MRT Sukhumvit.

Sunday

Easter Sunday Brunch and BBQ

Ocean Bangkok is officially owning Sundays as of late, with its all-day pool parties and diverse evening events. This Sunday is no different, starting off with an outdoor BBQ brunch and tapas for Easter. Chef Jacobo Astray, formerly of Michelin’s world best restaurant eiBulli, has put together a tasty finger menu and the cocktails are coming from local mixology legend Joseph Boroski (who was also just featured on the cover of Travel and Leisure). Stick around until 5 m, when salsa and meringue starts inside at the lounge bar.

12 pm to 9 pm. Free entry. Ocean Bangkok, Sukhumvit 33. BTS Phrom Pong.

Radioactive Improv Comedy

If salsa’s just not your jam, there’s going to be some different entertainment down in the Ocean basement – improv sketch comedy. Two teams are squaring off to bring out the laughs through ridiculous antics in the style of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” and “The Second City.”

7 pm. THB350 including one drink. Ocean Bangkok, Sukhumvit 33. BTS Phrom Pong.
