In yet another shameless effort to generate press, the travel website TripAdvisor has dubbed Bangkok’s Wat Pho the eighth-most “unique attraction” in Asia.
Yes, we know we’re feeding the beast.
Angkor Wat in Cambodia topped the list of 25 Asian attractions chosen by users of the popular website. It was followed by the Taj Mahal in India; Bayon Temple in Siem Reap, Cambodia; the Great Wall of China at Mutianyu; and Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon.
Monk Sutheethamma Nuwat, an assistant to Wat Pho’s abbot, said TripAdvisor had contacted the temple with news of the voting results. He said representatives from the website would present a Travelers’ Choice Attractions award to Wat Pho.
The list contains four other attractions in Thailand: the Grand Palace (10), Temple of Dawn (11), Wat Phra Kaew or the Emerald Buddha Temple (12) in Bangkok, and Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep (21) in Chiang Mai.
The award for Wat Pho is based on reviews from tourists who have visited the temple. TripAdvisor presented awards to a total of 39 attractions across the world in 2013, the Bangkok Post reported.
