Thai child sex worker tops Hong Kong box office

A story addressing Asian sex tourism told through the relationship between a young Chiang Mai sex worker and Hong Kong journalist has captivated Hong Kong and captured its box office.

“Sara,” which features Thai internet idol Sunadcha “Nes” Tadrabiab as the sex worker and was partly filmed in Thailand, earned over HKD6.03 million (THB25.5 million) in its opening week, according to results from the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.

The movie stars Charlene Choi as Sara, a Hong Kong journalist who is wasting away in a drunken stupor as her life falls apart. On the way to committing suicide, Sara meets a Thai sex worker in Chiang Mai who gives her a reason to live.

Director Herman Yau, known for more genre fare, was unsure how audiences would react to a more serious film and said he’s very proud of the film, Yahoo reported.

So far, there are no plans to release “Sara” in Thailand.
