A riverside gallery in the Charoen Krung area will show striking works by a Swiss artist who uses a hammer to pound, lacerate, and crack glass panels.
Starting Friday and continuing for one month, Shattered will feature 30 unique works and live performance by Swiss visual artist Simon Berger for his debut exhibition in Asia.
In a form of striking vandalism, Berger’s work inverts the pop policing theory of “broken windows” to show disorder can also create hope. To the 46-year-old carpenter-turned-glass artist, glass is a medium for light, and the hammer is not used for destruction but to amplify the effect.
“Disorder does not only lead to crime, disorder can also be the kingdom of light,” Berger says. “It’s about hope, not destruction. Light emerges from the hammer blows.”
Berger made his first works on glass in 2017 at his studio in Niederonz, Switzerland. Soon, the originality of his technique put him in the media spotlight, and he was invited by to many institutions and events such as the largest street art festival in Europe, the Street Art Fest Grenoble-Alpes, where he created a live diptych.
Shattered will open at 7pm on Friday and run until July 31 at Aurum Gallery. Admission is free. The gallery, owned by British musician and drum ‘n bass icon Goldie, is located on Soi Charoen Krung 30.
