Ikea dropped a big surprise late Friday afternoon with word it will soon open another store in Bangkok, this time right on Sukhumvit Road.
Downtown dwellers can say goodbye to treks to Bang Na or Nonthaburi when the Swedish furniture retailer opens at Emsphere — the long under construction mega project mall taking shape next to the Emporium shopping mall by BTS Phrom Phong.
Ikea didn’t mention any opening date or the concept for its new location. All we can say is it’s still good news that we don’t have to trek all the way to Bangyai just to buy their furniture.
Ikea first opened at Mega Bang Na before adding another location in Nonthaburi’s Bang Yai district. But that wasn’t enough to satisfy Thailand’s appetite for affordable Euro furniture with odd names, as it opened another on Phuket.
Correction: An earlier version of this story stated incorrectly that an Ikea was under construction next to Central Rama 2. In fact, that was only a rumored location.
