Prepare to shop for (one of) your favorite cartoon creatures when Studio Ghibli brings its imaginative and whimsical charm to an art exhibition at CentralwOrld to launch a line of Totoro-branded T-shirts.
Billed as the Japanese anime studio’s first collabo in the kingdom, Friday’s exhibition will be draped in banners showing key scenes from popular films including Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Ponyo featuring calligraphy by the producer Toshio Suzuki.
But the T-shirts that go sale at the same time are only for fans of My Neighbor Totoro; namely, its titular not-cat, not-rabbit creature. Ghibliheads can also check out photos from Tokyo’s Ghibli Museum by Thai photographer Kanyada Phatan.
Her photos of the museum, which opened in 2001, previously appeared in the studio’s photo book, The Tale of Ghibli Museum.
There will also be Insta-worthy photo spots consisting of life-sized versions of characters from My Neighbor Totoro including a lifesize version of the grinning Cat Bus, 12 legs and all.
Admission to the exhibition-slash-marketing hype event is free. It ends March 27.
Uniqlo will drop its exclusive merch Friday, including six adult tees and six for children, as well as some tote bags (also Totoro) at all stores and online.
Founded in 1985 by creative film directors Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata and producer Toshio Suzuki, Studio Ghibli is praised as one of Japan’s premier animation studio which have been among the highest-grossing anime films including 1988’s My Neighbor Totoro, 2001’s Spirited Away, and 2004’s Howl’s Moving Castle.
