Society and politics mocked via Ramakien characters by Thai artist

The abuse of power by the upper class, integrity and current political affairs are portrayed by a Thai comtemporary artist using two characters from the legendary Thai poem Ramakien.

In his exhibition, “Disparity,” Jirapat Tatsanasomboon’s pop-art paintings infer to the criticism in society and political affairs by using two contrasting protagonists, Hanuman and Nonthok, to represent controversies and Thai social values and action.

Nonthok is a servant who turned into an angry demon and the main opponent of Rama, the seventh avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu, and Hanuman is another Hindu god and an ardent devotee of Rama.

Jirapat sees the connection between cultures of Thailand and other countries, especially America, and depicts them through the differences and hypocrisy of humanity in terms of authority, greed, lust, and more.

The “Disparity” contemporary art exhibition will be held at Thavibu Gallery. Entry is free.
