It would be much easier to buy Snoop Dogg Lion’s campaign of personal reinvention if the man put even the slightest amount of energy into the project.
Sure, he went to Jamaica in order to find himself, but whilst there, he seemed to have problems even rousing himself to smoke the heroic amounts of ganja on offer nearby. In the course of that adventure, the Doggfather brought Diplo and Bunny Wailer into the same room, only to prove that he had no idea what to do with the two of them beyond facilitating their bizarre co-location.
Then, to top that off, Snoop came to Thailand, where he partook in an entertaining performance, and filmed the video for “Torn Apart.” In addition to taking Phuket as its backdrop, “Torn Apart”’s clip distinguishes itself amongst Snoop’s oeuvre by not being very good.
In the video, Snoop shuffles around on a beach with Rita Ora while postcard images of Thailand flash past. Muay Thai, elephants, monkeys and wats all make token appearances. Snoop’s verse, in which he rhymes “away” with “away” a dozen times over, ranks among the laziest in the hip-hop canon.
This videos scores some points for eliciting hometown pride, but otherwise serves only to add to the sordidness of an already tarnished legacy.
