Pian Keesin, ex-mayor and accused mobster, found dead in Phuket home

An infamous Phuket powerbroker, former Patong Mayor Pian Keesin, died today after reportedly falling inside his residence, The Phuket News reports.

Pian, 70, was found dead this morning at his home in Phuket City following a year which has seen his power wane and police going after the longstanding power he was believed to wield behind the scenes.

Still a popular figure with constituents, Pian was also vilified for what police said were his links to the underground elements that grip the community.

Since his five mayoral terms ended with a failed re-election bid, the man some considered above the law was briefly arrested and released one month ago in an enforcement effort to root out Phuket’s notorious “taxi mafia.”

Investigations have focused on his family’s holdings, and his son Preechawut “Prab” Keesin was also arrested and released last month.
