Amata “Pearypie” Chittasenee has spoken out after a long public silence, addressing her 1.5 million Instagram followers yesterday with an apologetic social media post to explain why she has stopped making makeup tutorials on YouTube for the past 9 months.

Pearypie, 30, is known for her high-production makeup tutorials, often shot in an artsy theme and in visually stunning locations, from the setting of a traditional Thai house to the landscapes of Arizona’s desert. She’s also a regular makeup artist for London Fashion Week and is generally regarded as one of the most celebrated bloggers in the beauty industry.

Aside from her frequent Instagram posts, showing her attending beauty events and traveling all over the world, Pearypie has built a fanbase through her YouTube channel, where she posted her creative (and often sponsored) videos. Since September of last year, however, she stopped uploading content on to the channel.

She wrote in an Instagram post yesterday: “To be honest with you all, yes, I had stopped making videos on Youtube … because one day I walked into the office and realized: What’s the point in all of these?”

“Everything looks the same to me. Bigger and bigger packaging. Lots more colors than before (and I mean all the same from every brand) and I’m responsible for all the plastic wraps and boxes. And what hurts me the most is it kills my passion. What am I chasing? What am I doing? Who will I become when I’m older?”

I used to smile, I used to enjoy colors and be all this mama unicorn. The more the better, and it was all so wrong. I always wanted to make good content with education — not makeup reviews for every brand and every single color. I would like to grow better, be better. I have been lost for so long. I would like to do so much more things that [are] truly valuable, to my life, my time, and hopefully I could inspire others people as well.”

Pearypie, who started a production company in Bangkok, is not the only beauty blogger who’s had to take a break from the glamour industry. Her story reminds us of Michelle Phan, whose career took a similar trajectory. The Vietnamese-American beauty blogger, after shooting to worldwide fame and building a multi-million dollar cosmetics empire, also took a year-long hiatus in 2016 for the same reason — to reconnect with herself.

Pearypie ended the post with an apology to her fans.

“I sincerely apologize to everyone, I know I never really have replied why I had suddenly stopped. I guess I just needed a break. Finish off this chapter of life, and it’s time to write a new one. I promise I’ll be here, I won’t disappear and I will never disappoint.”

As the digital beauty world awaits her return, here’s a look at some of our favorite makeup tutorials from Pearypie.
