Forgot to buy your mother a rice basket on your trip back home? Your brother jonesing for some black chicken bone essence? Suvarnabhumi Airport has got that covered.
(Caretaker) Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra escaped the political unrest Monday to do some officiating at the opening of an OTOP store at the international airport.
OTOP, the common name for the “One Tambon, One Product” program built up by her older brother Thaksin Shinawatra, encourages each local subdistrict across the country to develop its own unique products and sell them to the market with support from the government.
“Over 240,000 families have benefited from the project,” Yingluck said in the opening speech. “They generated sales worth more than 86 billion baht in 2013 alone.”
The OTOP store at the airport was described as a premium outlet, selling high-end and tax-free items produced by local Thai communities, and if the model store at Suvarnabhumi proves successful, more OTOP stores will be launched at other airports, Khaosod reported.
