Thailand’s iconic tuk tuk dress won best national costume at Miss Universe 2015 this morning, while one of the most shocking moments in the pageant history occurred when American host Steve Harvey announced the wrong winner.
Thailand’s high hopes for the tuk tuk dress were not in vain as Miss Thailand Aniporn “Nat” Chalermburanawong did her country proud by bringing home the best national costume award during the final round of the beauty contest today in Las Vegas.
This was the first year Thailand really thought outside the box and opted for, er, novelty instead of elegance. The dress was designed by cultural scholar Hirankrit Paipibulkul.
The 21-year-old beauty also made it to the top ten but missed out on a spot in the top five, which went to Australia, Colombia, France, Philippines, and USA.
Finally popular TV host Steve Harvey (the Family Feud guy) announced Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, as the winner, but her moment of glory was short-lived as it turned out Steve read out the results wrong. Cringe.
Miss Colombia stood stunned on stage as the crown and flowers were taken away from her. Miss Philippines, Pia Wurtzbach, was then announced as the true winner, as the entire world groaned at Steve’s terrible hosting skills.
“Listen, folks. Let me just take control of this. This is exactly what’s on the card. I would take responsibility for this. It was my mistake. It was on the card,” Steve said as he showed the crowd the ballot as the camera zoomed in.
“The first runner-up is Miss Colombia, it was my mistake. Still a great night!”
Steve Harvey, YOU HAD ONE JOB.
