Two killer whales stuck in fishing nets have reportedly been rescued near Koh Chang by Thailand Department of National Parks officials.
A veterinarian team from Chulalongkorn University is now taking care of the whales, both of which are injured.
One of the whales is unable to move and is being given physical therapy. The team has put the whale in a life vest and and dangling it with a rope “just on the surface of the water to enable it to breath,” NNT reports. The other whale is in better condition and can move freely.
The head of the Chula vet team said the severely injured whale’s condition is troubling, especially because an infection has been found in its lungs.
The large nets used in Southeast Asia’s commercial fishing operatings wreak havoc on marine life and often catch whales, dolphins, and sea turtles.
