Airports of Thailand (AoT) has denied that recent repairs of the east runway were causing major congestion and flight delays.
A recent story in a Malaysian financial paper said that Air Asia would be hit particularly hard by delays from the repairs.
But Suvarnabhumi Airport Director Somchai Sawasdeepon said that since the repairs began on Monday, delays had averaged only 30-40 minutes, which is normal. He added that only one flight, from United Airlines, had been forced to re-route to Don Muang and that was because of fuel problems, MCOT reported.
Call us crazy but by admitting to regular 30-40 minute delays and one re-routed flight in less than a week, Somchai seems to have hurt his argument.
In more Suvarnabhumi news, a new high-tech security checkpoint will open on the east side of the airport on June 15 at 4AM. Gadgets at the checkpoint include twelve x-ray scanners, six walk-through metal detectors and two CT80 explosive detectors, NNT reported. Body scanners will also be implemented.
Passengers should be able to pass through security two times faster at the new checkpoint, at a rate of up to 3,600 people per hour.
