The Ministry of Public Health said yesterday Nov. 29 that it will soon issue two statements aimed at reassuring foreign countries that there are no epidemic disease outbreaks in Thailand due to flooding.
Permanent Secretary for Public Health Paijit Warachit said that the ministry met with reps from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Health Ministry-US Center for Disease Control (CDC) Collaboration (TUC) to discuss its policies to help prevent disease during the flooding. Paijit said that the ministry wants to maintain confidence from foreign countries that Thailand won’t be hit by an epidemic.
The ministry will issue its first statement within a few days to confirm that there are no epidemic outbreaks in Thailand and that the country’s surveillance system is adequate to prevent one, MCOT reported.
The second statement will be issued after the ministry completes a five level rehabilitation of public services, disease prevention and control, environmental sanitation, food safety, and mental health services within 45 days of the flood receding. The statement will be distributed through 94 Thai embassies worldwide and will help to encourage tourism in Thailand, Paijit said.
Unusually large amounts of mosquitos have been reported lately, leading to fears of disease.
