Flood-stricken Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok is scheduled to re-open on April 1, but the verdict is still out on whether airlines will want to continue flights from it.
Only two commercial airlines, Nok Air and Orient Thai, ran flights out of Don Mueang before floods closed it down and both are currently running flighs from Suvarnabhumi, MCOT reported.
Flying Officer Anirut Thanomkulbutra, Airports of Thailand (AoT) president, spoke on Monday Dec. 19 of the airport’s rehabilitation after it had been hit by flooding for almost two months. The president said the surface of both the eastern and the western runways have not been damaged and are still strong, as verified by the Department of Highways.
AoT will spend roughly THB20 million repairing the airport, Anirut said.
A large amount of birds have reportedly taken residence at Don Mueang, drawn by the fish that floodwaters brought, and they could pose a danger to aircraft.
AoT is currently looking for technology to scare away birds, Anirut said.
The Don Mueang area, including the airport, was under water for about six weeks. Things are dry now and the AoT held a Big Cleaning Day on Monday to clear things out.
