Natcha on Film – Cinemas this week will show three different Chinese martial arts/action films, and one features all of your favorite horror characters — zombies, vampires and ghosts. However, the only things worth watching are “No Escape”, an Owen Wilson film shot in Thailand, and ‘Self/less’, a movie about a person wanting to live forever.
SPL 2: A time for consequences
There’s something about translated movie titles that make me laugh and this one does not disappoint.
The plot is somewhat confusing, but nobody really watches these type of brainless action films for the plot. “SPL 2” is about an undercover Chinese detective and a Thai prison warden, played by Tony Jaa, who end up working together to catch a criminal based in Hong Kong.
No Escape
Remember when Owen Wilson was in Thailand shooting a movie and the set caught on fire? Well, here’s the result of his trip to Thailand..
“No Escape”, originally named “The Coup”, is about an American family who relocate to an unnamed Asian country (we all know it’s Thailand) and find themselves caught in the middle of a coup. The family frantically look for ways to survive in a hostile environment.
It’s surprising that this film was allowed to play in Thailand.
The Assassin
Chinese films set in ancient times never appealed to me and this one looks like all the others.
“The Assassin” is set during the Tang Dynasty and is about a former assassin, Nie Yinniang, who returns to her family after 7 years of exile. Upon her return she is offered a mission to eliminate the governors who have disobeyed the orders of the emperor.
The film looks really dull and seems to have almost nothing unique about it – worth skipping.
Rigor Mortis
Vampires, ghosts, zombies, you name it, this movie has all your favorite horror characters.
This movie looks like some sort of mix between martial arts and horror. Rigor Mortis is set in a creepy, dirty public housing block in Hong Kong where occupants realize they’ve been living among the dead and the undead.
The Shamer’s Daughter
The plot of this film isn’t bad but the execution lets it down.
“The Shamer’s Daughter” is about a young girl named Dina who inherits her mother’s supernatural ability to look straight into the souls of people. Dina’s mother is hired to solve a murder within the royal family. Long story short, the mother is taken prisoner after she refuses to use her powers for the wrong reasons and it is now up to Dina to solve the case and save her mother.
Cub
Listed as a “Belgian Camping Horror Movie”, I wasn’t sure what to expect from something like this.
Cub is about Sam, a 12-year-old boy scout who is picked on by the scout leader, Peter. The annual camping trip takes place near the French border, where a mythical legend named Kai is said to live and cause mischief among visitors. Sam soon finds out that Kai is not really a legend and it causes more than just mischief.

Self/less
Want to live for an eternity? All you have to do is transfer your consciousness into a stranger’s body.
Self/less is a sci-fi film about a rich mogul who finds something money can’t buy – a cure for his cancer. He transfers his consciousness to a younger, healthier body but this has drawbacks as he soon finds out the reality behind the procedure and the company that performed it.
It seems like a cool plot, but when was the last time Ryan Reynolds starred in a decent film?
