New releases: Romance films roll out just in time for Valentine’s

NATCHA ON FILM — Valentine’s is coming soon and as expected, lots of romance films are coming out this week to cash in on all the couples snuggling together at the cinema, from your average Thai rom-com to a Hollywood love triangle.

When I started to watch the trailer, I almost thought it was going to be a “Step-Up” kind of film but in “looktung” style — I’m glad I was wrong.

“Luk Thung Signature,” put simply, takes place in a movie set where a young man in an art department falls in love with a co-worker who does the special effects. He’s too shy to confess to the girl that he has a crush on her because he fears that she won’t feel the same way. However, they bond over their love of Luk Thung music.

I think I’m starting to get used to these kind of films now, which is why I don’t really feel ashamed of liking this film.

Deadpool

Tired of watching your favorite comic book super heroes featuring in movies every year? Probably not, but either way this film brings a lively change as it features a cool anti-hero.

‘Deadpool” brings to life one of the most unconventional anti-heros, telling the origin story of an ex-Special Forces operative-turned-mercenary. Wade Wilson, played by Ryan Reynolds, is subject to a rogue experiment which results in him having accelerated healing powers. He adopts the alter ego Deadpool and armed with his new powers and a twisted sense of humor, he hunts for the man who has ruined his life.

I think this film is probably one of the most anticipated films this week but I can’t really take it seriously. 20th Century Fox seems to have not had good luck with Marvel adaptations — look at what happened to Spider-Man.

Carol

It wouldn’t be Valentine’s if there weren’t any romantic dramas coming out. Luckily, “Carol” seems to be the perfect film for a lovey dovey weekend.

“Carol,” set in 1950s New York, follows two women who come from completely different backgrounds and end up having an unexpected love affair. The younger woman, Therese, is a clerk at a local department store who dreams of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), an attractive woman trapped in a loveless marriage. They form an almost instant connection when they meet and their relationship deepens quickly. However Carol’s husband soon finds out and begins to question her responsibility as a mother, where the complication begins.

The film is not for everyone as it may be boring for some, but I think that the two main actresses’ performances may convince some people otherwise.

Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong

“Why is it that we always see Asian women with Caucasian men?” said every Asian man ever. This film is probably will break the hearts of those people even further.

“Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong” is about an Asian-American woman who visits Hong Kong for the first time and unexpectedly meets an American expat who has been living in the city for several years. The woman accepts his invitation to show her to her destination but oddly enough nothing occurs between the two — until one day when she coincidentally meets him again. He then takes a risk and asks her out on a date. Yeah, I think we all know how this story ends.

I like how the film promotes racial diversity and all but besides that, the film really has nothing going for it as its plot is pretty shallow.

The Choice

I can’t be the only one who is tired of Nicholas Sparks films because they seem to be the exact same plot every time.

“The Choice” takes place when a feisty medical student, Gabby, moves in next door to a ladies’ man, Travis. They form a strong relationship very quickly, although Travis is a laidback person who doesn’t take relationships seriously while Gabby is the complete opposite who always thinks about the future of relationships and tries to take them to the next step. Like every other Nicholas Sparks movie, there is a love triangle between Travis, Gabby, and her current boyfriend which causes tension between them. She inevitably has to choose the one that she finds right for her (hence the name of the movie) and we can probably guess who she’ll go with.

If you’re a huge fan of Nicholas Sparks then there’s probably no stopping you from going to see this movie but if you’re looking for something good to watch on Valentine’s Day it’s probably best to stay away from this film.
