Goodbye Train Night Market, hello Jodd Fairs?

No idea who Jodd is or what “fairs” is meant to be, but after the pandemic sealed the fate of the Train Night Market on Ratchada, its organizers have relocated only a kilometer away.

Opened just in time for this bout of cool winter weather, Jodd Fairs packs more than 600 vendors behind the CentralPlaza Grand Rama 9 shopping mall offering everything from street food and fashion to handicraft, plants, and more.

“At this new market, we try to modernize things to attract visitors, old and new,” someone answering the market’s phone said Tuesday, adding that it had a two-year contract to the space.

Although the Ratchada Train Night Market – a popular tourist destination pre-COVID – denied it was gone for good as recently as August, it doesn’t sound likely to return. Asked if people should expect its resurrection, the woman, who declined to give her name, hesitated before saying it might if “things go well.”

Though Jodd Fairs as a name tramples the idea that English words should make sense in English, “Train Night Market” has made little sense since it relocated from railway land to the Esplanade mall in 2013.

Jodd Fairs is open 11am to midnight every day behind the CentralPlaza Grand Rama 9 shopping mall. It can be reached by foot from MRT Phra Ram 9 exit No. 2.
