New Movies: J-Law after Hunger Games, Zoolander 2 feat. Justin Bieber

NATCHA ON FILM — Kicking off this week’s new movie releases is “Joy,”  starring Jennifer Lawrence in a rags-to-riches story. Another highlight for nostalgia lovers is “Zoolander 2,” in which Derek and Hansel look to get back into the modeling game.

Even though Jennifer Lawrence plays the lead role in this film, I can’t help but question how good this movie will actually be in comparison to “Silver Linings Playbook,” the last interesting film that she was in, came out four years ago.

Set in 1989, “Joy,” named after the main character, tells the story of a woman who has a gift for inventing things. But she works a low-paid job as an Eastern Airlines ticket clerk and her lack of funds keeps her from sharing her ideas with the world. This film tells the story about how she rises to power to become the founder of a powerful business dynasty.

The film plot seems unusual enough to make it interesting but I still feel like it’s missing something to make it a great film.

It feels like just yesterday when I first watched “Zoolander” and now 15 years later, they finally released a below-average sequel.

“Zoolander 2” takes place a few years after the first film as Derek and Hansel have to work together to model again as an opposing modeling agency is threatening to take them out of business. This film stars all the main characters from the first film and also includes more big names like Benedict Cumberbatch and Justin Bieber.

P.S Justin Bieber haters will be glad to know he doesn’t live very long in the movie, as seen in the trailer.

Although I absolutely loved the first Zoolander movie, this film gives off a “meh” vibe and looks like a waste of time to watch in theaters.
Legend

For those who recently watched “The Revenant” and immensely disliked Tom Hardy’s character, they can be relieved that he plays a more exciting and badass character in “Legend.”

Based on a true story, “Legend” takes place in 1960s east London. The film tells the story of identical twin gangsters Reggie and Ronnie Kray, considered to be two of the most notorious criminals in British history. The film is told from the perspective of Reggie’s wife and talks about their relationship, as well as Ronnie’s mental issues during their rise to power as London’s notorious gangsters.

This film is definitely a must watch for those who are into crime movies.
Concussion

When I first watched the trailer of this film, I was totally confused by Will Smith’s accent and then realized that he’s playing a Nigerian physician.

“Concussion,” also based on a true story, is a David vs. Goliath story about Nigerian immigrant Dr. Bennet Omalu, the discoverer of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a football-related brain trauma that causes players to have repeated concussions. The film tells the story of his struggle against well-established football teams as he attempts to spread awareness of the brain injury.

Besides Will Smith’s weird accent, the film looks decent as its plot raises several questions over  the ethics behind football organizations.

Little Boy

Sometimes you just have to believe in something hard enough for it to actually happen… well that’s what this little boy thinks, anyway.

“Little Boy” as its name implies, is a film about a young boy with supernatural powers who is willing to do whatever it takes to bring his father back from fighting during the Second World War. In order to prove this to his neighbors, he tells them that if he has enough power to move the mountains (which he actually succeeds in doing) then he can do anything to bring his father back. The film demonstrates the indescribable love between the son and his father.

All in all, if you’re hoping to for an amazing movie experience, then this movie is probably not the one for you. But it seems like a cute movie to enjoy without any expectations.
