New Movies: Forgetful Mario Maurer and The Jungle Book

NATCHA ON FILM — If you plan to avoid this year’s Songkran holiday because of the water shortage, then you’ll probably end up watching these movies. “Take Me Home” is a Thai horror film about a man with brain damage who finds clues to lead him back home. A live-action reimagining of “The Jungle Book” also comes out this week and is a huge throwback to those who enjoyed the animated film. Lastly, “Knight of Cups” is an artsy film for those who are confused about their lives.

I would say that half of all horror movies somehow involve people being haunted in their own homes. (See: Paranormal Activity 1-6)

“Take Me Home” is no different. This Thai horror film stars Mario Maurer as the main character who has brain damage after a fatal car accident and cannot remember anything besides his own name. He finds clues to lead him back home where his sister lives with her husband. But after a while he starts to have paranormal experiences.

I know this is probably a nostalgic movie for a lot of people, but one thing that really bothers me about it is the talking animals. (Especially, since the film is supposed to look real.)

“The Jungle Book” is based on the original animated film and follows a similar plot line. Simply put, the film is about an orphan boy who was raised in the jungle with the help of a pack of wolves, a bear, and a black panther. In my opinion, this CGI version is well done as the animals look realistic enough (although a bit awkward when they talk.) You will probably still enjoy it because the animals are voiced by Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, and Scarlett Johansson.

Overall, the film is not the kind that I would want to watch but I know a lot of people are excited because the original was such a classic.

“Knight of Cups” is about Rick, a screenwriter living in Santa Monica who feels empty after the death of his brother Billy, while his father bears the guilt of the death. Rick finds that the only way to distract himself from the real world is through his relationships with women, who seem to be the only ones who understand him. Rick goes through a journey to seek meaning to his life through a series of adventures with six different women.

This is the kind of film that attempts to offer viewers deep, underlying meanings.
