New Movies: Disney animation, Muay Thai and Egyptian Gods

NATCHA ON FILM — Disney is releasing another animation that everyone will enjoy, while “Anomalisa” and “Son Of Saul” are my picks for the must-see films this week.

If anything, it’s probably best to skip out on “Gods of Egypt” because nobody really wants to see Gerard Butler play a role that’s so similar to his role in “300.”

If watching a film with a lot of cheesy slow motion action scenes and a foreign actress who speaks broken Thai is your thing then I’m sure you’re going to enjoy this film.

“Monkey Twins” is about Neua, a young man who has mastered the art of monkey boxing through miming, and Lee In, a woman skilled in rhythmic dancing, who take part in a martial arts show. They both learn that they want to defeat the same enemy and decide to team up together and defeat their enemy through their love for boxing.

Besides the Muay Thai aspect of the film, there’s nothing much special about it. (And the Muay Thai doesn’t even seem that special.)
Zootopia

I’m not sure how Disney does it but a lot of their animation films recently have been really good and I feel like this one will also follow that trend.

“Zootopia” takes place in the animal city of Zootopia, where pretty much every animal you can think of exists. Among them is a fast-talking rabbit who’s trying to make it big in Zootopia. Unfortunately, he gets himself caught up in a crime that he didn’t commit, causing Zootopia’s top cop to go on hot pursuit. They both somehow end up being stuck together in a crisis and have to work together to solve it.

Zootopia looks like it could be fun to watch with a group of friends, since it doesn’t look like it’s just aimed at kids.

Anomalisa

When I first watched the trailer, I didn’t notice until about 30 seconds in that the characters weren’t actually real people but rather clay figures.

“Anomalisa” is about Michael Stone, an author who specializes in customer service. He has a negative view on life and rarely interacts with strangers. His lack of care for others and lack of excitement made him a really negative person. Until one day, during one of his business trips, he met an extraordinary stranger who slowly became a cure for his negative outlook.

I never really thought that this film, especially since it’s a stop-motion one, could explore such deep themes. I’m actually really amazed at how good this film looks and I hope that it won’t disappoint when it comes out in theaters.
Gods Of Egypt

Is it just me or does Gerard Butler always feature in this genre of movies? I mean, it’s kind of hard to forget him being the main character of 300 especially since he’s playing a similar role in this film.

“Gods of Egypt” is about the merciless god of darkness, Set, who takes over the throne of Egypt and causes the empire to descend into conflict. With a few people who are willing to rebel against Set, the situation looks hopeless. Until one day, Bek, a mortal hero, teams up with Horus, the patron god, and together they fight to save the world.

Personally, I’m not of a fan of this type of genre because I get really bored of how similar they all are. Especially since this film looks like it has really bad CGI, which makes me want to watch it even less.
Son Of Saul

I’m surprised that the trailer didn’t have any dialogue in it at all but just the visuals by itself made the film look really powerful.

“Son Of Saul” takes place amidst chaos in 1944 Auschwitz. Saul Auslander, a Hungarian member of the Sonderkommando whose job is to help the Nazis with the extermination, is put into the position of having to bury a boy he calls his own son. He insists on giving the boy a proper burial, before waging his own rebellion.

I’m a little interested in history films especially ones about Nazi Germany so I feel like this one is right up my ally. But if you’re not into these really serious and tense films then it’s probably best to just sit it out.
