San Andreas
From first look, this movie immediately reminded me of every other “end of the world” movie such as “War of the Worlds,” “The Day After Tomorrow,” and “2012.”
Now what makes this one different? Nothing, apparently. “San Andreas” is more apocalypse porn, this time set in California when a huge earthquake strikes. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, being the hero he is, must try to save all of California from disaster in his helicopter. Good luck, buddy.
Watch or not? Probably not, only If you really have nothing else to do with your life for one-hour and 47 minutes, it can probably serve as brainless entertainment.
The Voices
Q: When will Hollywood learn that putting talking animals in a live-action film for adults just doesn’t work?
A: Unfortunately, not before it made “The Voices,” a film about a psychologically troubled man who takes a dark turn after listening to advice from his dog and cat. “Mr. Whiskers makes me do bad things,” Ryan Reynolds mutters miserably. Seriously? Seriously. When I first watched the trailer, I thought it was going to be a comedy, but then it confused itself as it continued. Reynold’s character starts killing people left and right after his pets tell him to. Dr. Doolittle or American Psycho, Extreme Pets Edition?
Watch or not? Definitely NO! Talking pets are a huge red flag. If I’ve never dissuaded you before, please listen to me now: Avoid this one.
Yes or No 2.5
Now this series has been going on for quite some time, and they even decided to make a sequel for it! Or something like that.
“Yes or No” is back again with 2.5 times the tomboy-lovin’ and drama. Nothing much to say about this film. Despite its focus on the dimensions of female-female relationships, it seems to fit turn them into typical, formulaic Thai drama, and that’s just not my thing.
Watch or not? I never watch these kinds of films so for me it’s a no. But if you wake up tomorrow wanting some tomboy drama or formula-scripted Thai melodrama, this is a no-brainer for you.
Kruato
Now this film seems made for the pious (or piety-curious) folks out there.
The film retells the story of Somdej Toh, one of the most famous Buddhist monks during the Rattanakosin Period. He is remembered for his spiritual powers, and his amulets are widely sought after.
Watch or not? After looking into this, some people are really anticipating its release. It looks interesting, but I’d probably fail to understand half the movie. Catch it if you’re interested in Buddhist history, avoid it if the idea of a religious-themed film bores you.
